How to Prepare Artwork for DTF Printing

Good DTF printing begins with artwork prepared for the size it will actually be printed. A clean file helps preserve edges, small text, color separations, and transparent areas through the printing and pressing process.

Accepted DTF file formats

Udderly Custom accepts PNG, SVG, and PDF files for DTF and UV DTF orders. For garment DTF transfers, the artwork should have a transparent background and should be submitted unmirrored.

PNG

PNG is useful for raster artwork with transparency. Prepare the image at 300 DPI at its final print dimensions. Make sure the transparent area is truly transparent rather than white, black, or a checkerboard pattern saved as part of the image.

SVG

SVG is a vector format and can preserve clean curves and shapes when properly created. Before exporting, check fonts, strokes, clipping masks, transparency, and effects to ensure the file displays as intended.

PDF

PDF can contain vector and raster elements. Confirm the page size, artwork bounds, transparency, embedded images, and fonts before uploading. A PDF is not automatically high resolution; any raster images inside it still need enough resolution at the final print size.

Use 300 DPI at final print size

DPI must be evaluated together with physical dimensions. A small 300-DPI image can lose detail when enlarged several times. Set the artwork to the intended printed width and height first, then confirm that raster content remains approximately 300 DPI.

Avoid taking a small web image or screenshot and enlarging it for a full-front design. The builder can make the dimensions larger, but it cannot recreate missing image detail.

Remove the background carefully

Zoom in around the entire design. Look for halos, leftover pixels, rough edges, and enclosed areas that should be transparent. White artwork should remain white artwork; only the unwanted background should be removed.

The background-removal feature in a gang-sheet builder is a convenience for simple files. It is not a replacement for properly prepared artwork, especially when the design contains shadows, distressed textures, fine hair, soft edges, or colors similar to the background.

Submit DTF artwork unmirrored

Upload garment DTF artwork in its normal readable orientation. Do not reverse text or logos before submission. The DTF production workflow handles the orientation required for printing.

Check lines, text, and distressed areas

Very small lettering, thin lines, tiny isolated dots, and extremely fine distressed textures may not reproduce like larger solid artwork. View the design at its intended physical size, not only at a high zoom level. Make sure small elements are intentional and visually useful at that size.

Confirm the ordering dimensions

For single-image DTF transfers, select the finished dimensions and quantity. Artwork must fit within the 22.25-inch-wide media requirement. For DTF gang sheets, arrange designs inside the 22-inch-wide sheet and choose a length from 1–20 feet.

Final artwork checklist

• PNG, SVG, or PDF format
• Transparent background
• 300 DPI at final size for raster artwork
• Correct finished width and height
• Unmirrored orientation
• No unwanted pixels or background halos
• Small text and fine details checked at print size
• All designs inside the builder’s printable boundary
