How to Press Instant-Peel DTF Transfers

Correct temperature, pressure, time, and peel technique work together when applying an instant-peel DTF transfer. A heat press that reads 300°F can still produce inconsistent results if the pressure is uneven or the garment interferes with the platen.

The instructions below apply to DTF transfers ordered from Udderly Custom. Film and adhesive systems vary, so use the instructions supplied by the manufacturer when pressing transfers from another source.

Recommended DTF press settings

  • Temperature: 300°F
  • Pressure: Firm
  • First press: 3–5 seconds with firm pressure
  • If firm pressure is unavailable: 8–10 seconds
  • Peel: Immediately after the first press
  • Second press: Repeat the same temperature, time, and pressure after peeling

Step-by-step pressing process

  1. Place the garment flat on the heat press and position the transfer with the printed design facing the garment.
  2. Make sure seams, collars, zippers, pockets, and drawstrings are not preventing even pressure across the artwork.
  3. Press at 300°F for 3–5 seconds using firm pressure. If the press cannot provide firm pressure, extend the time to 8–10 seconds.
  4. Open the press and peel the film immediately in one smooth, fluid motion.
  5. Cover the exposed design and press it a second time using the same temperature, time, and pressure used for the first press.

What should cover the second press?

We prefer a textured fiberglass sheet because it protects the design and can give the finished transfer a pleasing texture. A Teflon sheet, parchment paper, or clean jersey T-shirt material can also work as a cover.

Why pressure matters

Heat activates the adhesive, but pressure helps the adhesive make consistent contact with the garment. A transfer may lift along an edge when a seam or raised area prevents the platen from pressing evenly. Reposition the garment so the decorated area lies flat whenever possible.

Peel in a smooth motion

This is an instant-peel product. Peel immediately after the first press rather than waiting for the transfer to cool. Use one steady motion instead of stopping and restarting across the design.

Washing and care

There is no required waiting period before the first wash. Wash normally; turning the garment inside out is optional. Tumble drying works well. Do not bleach, and avoid using the hottest iron setting directly on the decoration.

Troubleshooting

If an edge does not appear fully bonded, first check whether the press delivered firm, even pressure and whether a seam or garment feature was under the design. Confirm the temperature and time before trying again. Do not keep adding excessive heat without identifying the cause, because fabrics and garment finishes respond differently.
